The Bluetooth hands-free feature will continue to function as designed even if you do not choose the retrofit option. It is not a requirement to select the retrofit option in order to continue to use Bluetooth for hands-free functionality.
If your vehicle has an active BMW Assist Safety Plan or BMW ConnectedDrive contract which expires January 1, 2017 or later, you will receive communication from BMW to inform you that your vehicle is affected. This campaign is predominantly for Model Year 2013 and earlier vehicles, although Model Year 2014 X6, Model Year 2015 and earlier X1, and Model Year 2016 and earlier Z4 are also affected. Only vehicles with an active BMW Assist / BMW ConnectedDrive contract expiring January 1, 2017 or later are affected.
If your vehicle is affected, your BMW's on-board cellular technology, used for delivering numerous BMW ConnectedDrive / BMW Assist features, will no longer be supported after December 31, 2016. This will eliminate features such as SOS, BMW Assist eCall™, and Concierge Call.
In order to maintain our firm commitment to customer satisfaction, BMW is offering several solutions since your current BMW ConnectedDrive / BMW Assist contract is active beyond this date.
Please note: once completed, your selection cannot be reversed. If the cellular technology is deactivated, your BMW will no longer be able to support BMW ConnectedDrive / BMW Assist and important features like the emergency call button.
After December 31, 2016, the underlying technology originally used for BMW Assist services in affected vehicles will be no longer supported. BMW Assist services will no longer be available. For customers choosing to retrofit their vehicles, updated technology will be installed so that BMW Assist services can continue to function for the remaining duration of the contract.
Customers will not get an extension beyond their existing expiration date. Customers with less than one year remaining on their current subscription may purchase a BMW Assist Safety Plan for $199 per year to ensure an extended period of service.
